The future of E-mobility and Urban Planning in Egypt

The UITP MENA was invited to participate in the “Sustainable Transport in Egypt 2019: The future of E-mobility and Urban Planning in Egypt”19-20 November 2019 organized in Cairo by CEDARE and Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Egypt in partnership with the Egyptian Ministry of Environment

Internationally renowned e-mobility experts and policy makers met to share experiences on deployment of electric vehicles in various countries, including an in-depth exploration of case studies in MENA and Europe. Key national stakeholders shared their plans to jointly develop and refine the vision for the way forward.

Keynote speakers included H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Egyptian Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Cyrill Nunn, German Ambassador to Egypt, and H.E. Ms. Christina Kampmann, Board member of FES, and ex-minister of Family Affairs North-Rhine-Westphalia, Mr. Richard Probst, Resident Representative, FES Egypt, and Dr. Hossam Allam, Regional Program Manager, CEDARE

H.E. Dr. Khaled El Adli, Professor at Cairo University, Former Governor of Giza and Former VP of International Society of City & Regional Planners (ISOCARP), Prof. Soheir Hawas, of the National Organization of Urban Harmony (NOUH) and Dr. Ayman Smadi, Director of UITP MENA.

Extensive consultations with stakeholders representing Government, academia, industry and financial institutions agreed that public transport and shared mobility must be at the core of the paradigm shift towards cleaner mobility, while ensuring safe fuel specifications as pre-requisite in the fight against air pollution. Future cities must therefore be primarily walkable, cycle friendly and characterized by mixed use. It is noted that CEDARE is releasing an update to the policy brief on mainstreaming electric vehicles in Egypt.
